XAUUSD Meaning Explained — What the Gold Forex Symbol Actually Is
XAUUSD is Gold priced in US Dollars. The XAU code is the ISO 4217 currency symbol for Gold (Au from the periodic table). Real spreads, pip value, lot sizes and why pros prefer XAUUSD over Gold futures.
XAUUSD Meaning — The Short Answer
XAUUSD is the Forex ticker for Gold priced in US Dollars.
It is a synthetic spot pair, just like EUR/USD or GBP/USD, except the “base currency” is Gold (1 troy ounce) instead of the Euro. When XAUUSD trades at 4,720, it means one troy ounce of Gold costs $4,720 USD.
The two halves of the symbol:
- XAU — the ISO 4217 currency code for Gold. The “X” denotes a precious metal (not a country), and “AU” comes from aurum, the Latin name for Gold and its symbol on the periodic table.
- USD — the quote currency (United States Dollar).
So XAU/USD literally reads as “Gold quoted in US Dollars per troy ounce”.
Why Forex Calls Gold “XAUUSD” Instead of Just “Gold”
The Forex market is built on currency codes, not asset names. To make Gold tradeable inside the same infrastructure that handles EUR/USD or USD/JPY, the financial system needed a 3-letter ISO code for Gold. The ISO 4217 standard, maintained by the International Organization for Standardization, assigns:
- XAU = Gold
- XAG = Silver
- XPT = Platinum
- XPD = Palladium
This is why your broker shows XAUUSD in the watchlist, XAGUSD for Silver, and so on. They are not arbitrary names — they are standardized currency codes used by banks, exchanges and clearing houses worldwide.
XAUUSD vs Gold Futures (GC) vs Gold ETFs (GLD)
Many beginners confuse these three. They all track the price of Gold, but they are very different products:

Retail Forex traders almost always trade XAUUSD because:
- Low minimum lot sizes (0.01 lot ≈ 1 ounce).
- 23-hour market with tight spreads during London/NY overlap.
- No contract expiration / rollover.
- Same platform as their other Forex pairs.
XAUUSD Spread, Pip Value and Lot Size
On a standard ECN account, typical XAUUSD spreads during the London-NY overlap range from 0.10 to 0.30 pips (10 to 30 cents per ounce). Outside the overlap, spreads can widen to 0.50–1.00.
Pip value depends on lot size:

XAUUSD Trading Hours and Sessions
XAUUSD trades around the clock during the Forex week, but liquidity and volatility cluster in three windows:
- Tokyo / Pre-Asia (~00:00-07:00 UTC) — quiet, ranges 30-60 pips.
- London open (07:00-10:00 UTC) — first major spike, 60-120 pips common.
- London-NY overlap (12:00-16:00 UTC) — peak volume, often the day’s full range.
- NY close (20:00-22:00 UTC) — fading, choppy.
The week opens Sunday 22:00 UTC and closes Friday 22:00 UTC.
Why Smart Money Traders Pick XAUUSD Over Other Pairs
XAUUSD has three structural features that make it the favorite of ICT and SMC traders:
- Wide ranges. 100-200 pip days are normal, which means R:R 1:3+ trades are achievable without holding overnight.
